There were two of them which were played in every club at least twice a party... and, the funniest of it all, both of them were NOT Taiwanese! :)

First one: a bunch of guys from Korea:

for more curious people:

Super Junior (Korean: 슈퍼주니어), often referred to as SJ or SuJu (슈주), is a 13-member boy band from South Korea formed in 2005. Sorry, Sorry was a critically and commercially successful hit in Asia, becoming 2009's best-selling Korean-language album in South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, China, and the Philippines. Sorry, Sorry won a Disk Daesang (Album of the Year) at the 2009 Golden Disk Awards.

Cool, huh?

And this one is even better! :)

The song actually starts at 2 minutes;)

"Nobody" is a dance pop song produced by Park Jin-young and recorded by Korean girl group Wonder Girls. Released as a digital download single on September 22, 2008 in their native Korea, the song became popular within hours, becoming a top search term and ranking #1 on various digital music sites.

so far this semester there are no hits like that.

Well, waiting for them! GO Korea! :)

The big comeback!

It is extremely annoying when others are right about you and your doings. And even more annoying, when they know you better than you know yourself. This is what Jimmy reminded me about a week ago - he said that I would be able to write only for a couple of months and so it happened. But I decided to say no! I am stronger than that and I will prove to him and myself that I can finish what I started. And there is one good motivation for that: I really want to have something to remember after I come back home :)

Actually, there are a couple of reasons for me stopping writing. First of all, going away from home for such a long time is more difficult than I expected. There are moments of apathy, loneliness and sleepless nights. Of course one might say that in that case you can be bloging and writing all the time. Yes, that is true... But what about? At the time nothing seems worth mentioning, and afterwards it seams it is already to late for it. Than there are some trips you make abroad, but when you come back some stuff has to be done, presentations to be made etc. and you are not in the mood for writing. And then you forget about writing, and there is another trip, holidays, break, exams... what to say, a lot of excuses. But recently there was a lot of time to make some thinking as well and that is why I decided to make this small comeback. So than... here I go! hopefully it will be better than the last time :)

And there is some stuff to write about: trip to Philippines, one month in China, Christmas in Taipei, New Year's Eve, some cool parties, Sun Moon Lake, exams, break time, shitty weather (raining right now...),studying Chinese, new semester and much more I guess.

And NBA Playoffs. Go Suns and Jazz! :)

So - let's get it on!

Taxi's - party people's best friend:)

This is really cool thing. There are so many of them! and they are everywhere! plus, not only they are fast and comfortable, they are very cheap. And the capacity of one normal taxi is up to 5 people:)

It looks like a pic from NYC, not from Taipei! well, maybe except for a different fonts;) honestly, there are thousands of them. Waiting time is around 30 seconds. And even though they do not speak English, it is possible to get to terms with them:)

And the traffic is not that bad either. It is something Polish can dream about:) 3 lines everywhere, not to many traffic jams, great signs... It seems impossible to get lost around here!

But let's get bask to economic point of taxis:) We use them usually to get to parties, which are mostly held in one district. And that is the center of the city. And the coolest thing - it never cost more than 200NT$ for the whole travel! If 4 people are going, it is 5 PLN per person. and in fact it is a couple of kilometres! Not to add that taking the MRT (metro) would cost around 25NT$. So lets say that the cost is doubled, but you get door to door transfer... That's so convenient;)

And you can have so much fun in the taxi... coming back from Jonas's b-day party, we got a taxi-minivan. Although at the beginning we thought that he was arguing with us, he simply had this way of talking;) and when he caught that we are coming back from b-day, he turned into greatest taxi driver ever! He turned up the music, playing some hiphopish tunes, started dancing and laughing with us, opened the roof window so that Jonas could play with his baloon and stand up and shout "I'm the king of the world!" :D Finally he did a little tokio drift coming into final corners. Best car ride in Taipei so far!

I should not mention that we took his business card and wil call him before next party, should I?:)

And Taipei at night is breathtaking...

Weather

This is probably the most convenient time of the year for the Europeans.

It is neither too hot nor too cold, temperature oscillates on the level of 25 degrees. Recently it has not been raining, although there was already a week when it rained heavily for a couple of days in a row. But it was the time when two typhoons were going near Taiwan - unfortunately neither of them visited Taiwan (maybe it sounds suicidal, that I am waiting for typhoon, but locals tell that it is unforgettable experience:) ). So autumn and winter are nice:)

But this was not a case at the beginning. 2 months ago it was all time time around 35 degrees, enormous humidity, and it seemed impossible to stay outside during the day for more than 20 minutes. Walks to school, which take about 10 minutes, were unbearable and mostly ended with sweaty t-shirt and bad moods. That is why so many people did catch cold at the beginning - including me.

The other thing is that it is impossible to live without air conditioning. Wherever you go, there are fans blowing in your face. It is great and pleasant and all, but guarantees a cold before you get used to it. Constant temperature changes are tricky.

So, if you are coming to Taiwan - be prepared!:)

Some things about the exchange... :)

Well, if I a to write about the impressions, let's write about exchange itself at the beginning:) this should make things easier:)

The People

There are around 50 people at exchange at college of management. Overall, there are probably more than 20 of the at the whole NTU, not including GMBA students, who are here in a number of 80 or more. But all those people can be divided into some ethnic groups basing on the country of origin:)

The Francophones

Mostly French, but there are some cases of Belgium people as well. No one knows why, but they represent the biggest number of exchange students - maybe up to 25%. It looks like they want to conquer Taiwan through silent establishment of student colony:) One way or the other, there are students fro best universities - Paris, Lyon, Toulouse... Because of them French is the second most spoken language here - after Chinese :P And it gives me a great opportunity to perfect French. It is funny how surprised they are when it occurs that I can speak their native language - but I did improve in just these 2 months:D

German group

Germans and Swiss. I do not think that there is someone from Austria. Do not now why... To my surprise, they are more open minded and more "European", without German classic attitude;) but I guess that there are only guys from these countries.. and they represent around 15% of people.

The Dutch

Quite a lot of them around here, mostly from Erasmus University. But they represent many different ethnics, like Turkey, Taiwan, Italy... Dutch can be heard around here quite often, not that there is a big difference between it and German:P

Scandinavians

Mostly Swedish and Norwegians. Mostly tall. Mostly cool:) and with a great fashion taste;)

English-speaking group

That is Americans, Brits and Aussies. Quite a bit of them, although they do not stand out of the picture. Most of them came here for intensive Chinese course - 2 hours of Chinese every day. kinda cool, but they do not have tie to travel:P

Rest of the world

hmmm, difficult to say from what countries is this "rest"... There are some people from Spain, a couple from Latin America... Some Japanese... And that's pretty much it. At the exchange, I am the only representative of my beloved country;), what makes me quite exotic:) At GMBA there is someone from Russia and Slovakia, but at the exchange I guess I am the only representative of Eastern Europe. Not that it bothers me, but it would be cool to have someone to speak Polish with from time to time...

Overall there are more guys than girls. And they are much cooler than girls. No kidding. Open minded, creative, outspoken, intelligent, eager to travel around. I did not expect that I will meet here so many people, who will become my really good friends.

There is a great chance for a Euro Trip in the future:)

Peace of mind

Finally, some peace and quiet and I can write a bit on the blog...

Well, it is not that I am lazy. Or not systematic. Not even that there is no time. There is. But for the last month there was rarely time to sit down, chill, focus on my own business... It has been just a month of school, but I feel that it was already 5 months! There are always some papers to write, cases to read, presentations to be made. As it occurs, you have to work here maybe not much harder, but more often than at SGH. Professors expect you to be always prepared for the discussion, to have read the chapter and be ready for in-depth analysis. But luckily I have already made my share of cases and presentations, so I will be able to focus on other aspects of living in Taiwan... Finally.

And maybe it is time to write about some impressions after these almost two months of living here? :)

Why is it so hard to be systematic and work with schedule?

Nah, Jimmy, you were not right - I am still here, trying to create something. But the first two weeks of school are usually disastrous, more annoying and irritating than examination session (well, maybe this is only mine opinion). Although I thought that everything is well planned, I did not forget anything, the truth is - if it seems to go smoothly and without any problems, something has to mess up:/

Having to fight bureaucracy on many levels in two countries, I cannot focus and sit and finally spend 5 hours on Chinese without being interrupted. Or I want to write something. or visit new places. All in all, the day looks like this:

Well, maybe not like that:) but there are so many distractions that it becomes really difficult to start doing something in systemic way!

Hopefully next week it will be easier to get ready:) and thinking of it, this is more or less the way student's life looks like during the examination session:) somehow these short videos cheered me up a bit:)

After the weekend, because on the weekend there will be trip to the mountains!:)

DeafLympics – Basket semis and finals, football final

DeafLympics are ending right now, I am just watching closing ceremony and will go to the roof of my dorm to see fireworks on Taipei 101 (this was the coolest thing I have seen so far:) ). But now a few words about sports I know and can rally comment on.
First – b-ball. Two semi-finals: USA vs. Greece and Israel vs. Lithuania.

First one was interesting, Greeks were leading for the most of the game. But suddenly they run out of ideas and motivation, they became slow and were making the easiest mistakes. And although US were struggling for the most of the game, they sweat out the victory. But the game might have gone both ways – Greeks lost on they own wish.

Israel vs. Lithuania: it is not even worth my time to write about that game. The only thing that is worth noticing is how Lithuania warms up. Especially with the 3 pointers:)

And this is almost the final score – I did not care to stay till the end:) but one photo says more than 1000 words:P

The Finals:

Woman’s final: Sweden vs. US. Very good game, pleasure for the spectators. The game was all the time on the edge, but US did not lead at any time. Still, I love bball on any level, and if chicks are playing so well, it becomes a must-see game:) and Swedish players were not only good – they were also cute:)

Guys final: Lithuania vs. USA. At the first glance it is clearly visible that American team is stronger, bigger and quicker. It also occurs to be much more aggressive – in defense, offence and in off-play confrontations.

First 5 minutes of the game are shocking – Haney, nr 9 US team (9 like MJ at the Olympics:) ) scores like crazy, every shot goes in. they lead 9 – 0 at the start. Lithuania seems scared, confused and cannot find a way to outplay their opponents. But when they calm down, “multiples triples” go in and it is a close game. For two and a half quarters.

In the middle of the third quarter US goes out with full-court press and Lithuanian team makes mistake after mistake. They struggle to keep the game close, but at the beginning of the last quarter everything is known – US will be the champs.

Still, their celebration is not as cool and positive as Swedish one.

Plus I believe that I enjoyed the female final more:)

Football

Final: Russia 2: 3 Ukraine. The first football game I have seen lie on a big stadium:) and I wish it was better. I guess that I should not expect a lot, I have already learned that on other sport and tournaments, but… Well, I saw the final. And that is cool:)

School is back!

Holidays are finally (and unfortunately) over. I got a bit lazy and I was not blogging, as there were some extra things to do during last few days (DeafLympics and stuff...:) ) School year (or academic year as you wish) is about to start. Well, not everyone is happy with that... but what you can do? At least my school looks cool:)

The plan for the week looks promising, 3 days of school 4 days of the weekend, that is, 4 days of studying Chinese:) and some extras - b-ball, kung fu, negotiations club, soccer, hip-hop class... I guess this will not be boring! :) but the schedule is going to be packed tightly, gonna be exhausted after week like that… But I did not come here on vacation, did I? :)

My building

First classes were cool, It is not like previous Polish students said – that they are boring, professors do not speak fluent English, that they are not creative. My first professor studied at the University in US (California if I recall correctly), speaks great English and his lecture was surprisingly interesting. Maybe because it is so popular in clubs here (and probably everywhere else), or it has catchy beat, or the lyrics kinda feel right. Or because I could not sleep day and night. Spain vs. Russia, can you ask for anything better… Well, about that:)

The final score – 110:102 – is reeeeealllly high, as for 40 minute game. One of the players scored 43 points, another had double-double, 21 points and around 11 assists. So where are the reasons to complaint?

Well, first of all, it seems that the taller you are the less prone to deafness you are. No disrespect to anyone, but the players were not to tall, 195 top – there were no dunks, high blocks or monstrous fights under the basket.

There was not much finesse, creativity, spectacular dribbles/passes/steals/shots. Although there were some. Still…

I did enjoy it:) Besides, who would not like to watch the game when Iglesias is playing?:)

When I finally adjusted my expectations to the reality, the game was really fun to watch. So now – a little recap and some photos:)

1st quarter: Shoot for shoot, points for points. Very high percentage on both sides, and many, many 3pointers:) final score – draw around 25.

2nd quarter: pretty much the same thing, although they start to miss more shots. Some calls made by the referees met strong disagreement from the spectators. The half ends with one spectacular 3 pointer made by Spaniard 3 seconds before the end of it. But that was not the end! Gucev, Russian player, who in the whole game scored 43 points (sic!) hit it from the mid-court right with the siren!!! He got a standing ovation and everyone expected exciting second half :)

3rd quarter: to everyone’s surprise, Russian team gets the lead and keeps it up until the end of the quarter. At one point, they lead with 10 points. You can see anger and confusion among Spaniards. Gucev continues his show.

4th quarter: this are Iglesias’s 10 minutes. He does whatever he wants – dribbles between defenders, shoots 3pointers, makes baskets with fouls. Spain is constantly reducing Russian lead, finally top it, and go further on. The 8-point lead does not show how close the game was and how both teas had to struggle at times.

Gucev (13) and Iglesias (7)

Some extra photos from the show:)

(almost) final scoreboard

Winners

Taipei basketball frog:)

Sleepless in Taipei...

Another sleepless night in this Asian city… I do not know what it is: it cannot be jet leg, cos’ if it was, I would get sleepy around 10 – 11 in the morning. Sport teams, where teammates are shouting to each other (basketball, football, volleyball), are definitely more difficult for them. Maybe tennis, taekwondo, karate – where “sound” of the opponent has some meaning. But discus? Long jump? High jump? I may agree with running, as you are supposed to hear the shoot of the gun and start to it, but marathon? Does deafness influence balance, speed, coordination?

(The True Warriors:) )

Let’s just ask a question: if Usain Bolt was deaf, would he take part in normal or Deaf Olympics?

Anyway, tomorrow is Spain : Russia game in b-ball. Whether or not the deaf should have their own Olympics, if runners or athletes or soccer players are disabled in some way and sport is more difficult for them – is not a discussion here. It may become one later, when I get more philosophical and learn more about the subject, but for now let’s leave it alone:)

Anyway, DeafLympics 2009 just started:)

There was cool ceremony, with dancing, speeches and fireworks – the ones from Taipei 101 were really amazing! The speech by Taiwanese president was a bit provocative and you could see propaganda there, but on the other hand why should he not underline that Taipei is “a great city which just recently developed and is getting a well deserved place in the modern world”? It is, so he should say that.

Aaaaaanyway, I am getting a bit of the subject.

The Olympics are going to be here until 22nd, so I decided to go every day to some cool event.

Luckily, Poland was playing volleyball today with Turkey at the NTU’s gym, so together with two friends, Philippe and Stephan, we decided to check it out, so that we know if it is worth going. I should add that tickets to all events, except opening and closing ceremony, are free, so there is not much risk there:)

We came to the gym 40 minutes before the start of the game and what we saw was… disappointing. Fiji was playing against Iran, the skills they presented were not astonishing. A bit downhearted, we were waiting for the next game, while I got to know part of the Polish delegation!

Very friendly Polish representatives chatted with me for a while, somehow shocked, that there is a Pole in the gym. They gave me the flag, magazine, exchanged contacts and I got to cheer up Poland with two of our girls, who, hopefully, will bring some medals back to the country.

And so the game started.

The difference in skills and preparation were visible at the very first glimpse of an eye. They passed better, jumped higher and smashed harder.

Now a quick recap of the game:
Set 1: Polish lose to 16. After awful beginning, they got their heads backs in the game in the second part, but it was too late and not enough.
Set 2: Polish strike back. After easy win in first set, Turks loosen up and end loosing to 20 (or something around that;) )
Set 3: easy win for Poland. 25:18. Everyone is shocked. 2:1
Set 4: we have a matchball with 23:24. But it goes different way – 26:24 for Turkey. 2:2
Set 5: a lot of stress, beginning looks like high school volleyball, players are just trying to save the ball from touching the ground. Point for point. But Poland has more luck or stamina or psychological strength – call it as you wish. We won 15:13!

Well, I am not that a patriot and all, but it was cool to be shown every few minutes on the big screen by the cameraman.

Probably gonna go watch it again!

But now I am waiting for Spain: Russia game in basketball on the 9th. I hope it will be wicked!

And BTW – this is my Universities gym. Hopefully, I will play my basketball games there:D

Partei In Taipei – the Luxy Experience

Probably the best clubbing I have ever had.

Probably, because the Taiwanese say, that they are going to take me to even better clubs.

Well, than I do not know what I should expect!

The name of the club – Luxy. From what they told me, I expected it to be somehow similar to Polish Platinium – people around 30, managers and directors in fancy clothes with cool drinks.

Well, it was not quite that.

Entrance cost 600NTD – around 55 PLN, 15 Euros. In that price, you had one drink or 2 beers. Sounds like a lot for a disco… But it was not a disco. It was a whole entertainment show!

When you enter, you see mostly students dressed in cool, American fashion. But not exaggerating in one way or the other – no sweatshirts as well as no suits. Girls are VERY cool – the “mode” is that they wear skirts which barely cover their butts and shoes on very high heels. After seeing some of them you accept the fact that they are not being slutty, but every girl dresses like that here. All you want to say is “nice mate!” :)

The club had two chambers – hip-hop (obviously the more crowded one:) and electro. Both with amazing dj’s, who mixed the music in extraordinary way. The dancefloors were huge, but after some time they were too crowded anyway. But the cool thing was that it was cool- air conditioning was working all the time.

Every hour four dancers – the luxy girls – made a dance show lasting around 10 minutes. And yes, they were fine…

But barman show was even cooler! Two guys throwing flaming bottles, making flames, juggling – classy entertainment.

However probably the finest moment was when our group of 10 people was allowed to get on a stage with the dj and dance up there. It was crei-zei!!!

In the meantime, if you were in the right place at the right time, you were able to get some free drinks – shots of tequila, beer from the bong… So the truth is that for 700TWD, we got entertained for 5 hours, drunk our share and spend unforgettable night and got taxi both ways!

First Partei In Taipei – hopefully there are still many to come!

First B-ball with the Asians

Walking nearby the street where NTU’s sport courts are, I decided to stop for a minute and see what I will encounter on the court. The view did not terrify me.

The average basketball player is about 180 cm high, and someone above 190 is immediately considered a center. Still, some of them could jump quite high, what was impressive. As I was explained, basketball and baseball (the latter in particular) are extremely popular in Taiwan. This is due to enormous influence American culture has on the country. Soccer, which is probably the most common sport around the globe, has not that many supporters in Taiwan.

Anyway, let’s get back to the game. The court was cool, the surface was quite soft and sticky, so it seemed as a perfect solution. As it occurred, it had another cool feature – it was getting dry very quickly. During 2h game it rained 4 times, just for a few minutes, but still… But on the other hand the forced breaks gave a chance to cool out in the rain and catch the second breath.

Still, I would not be myself if I was not looking for some serious competition. This time – the competition found me.

A group of oldboys, in their late 40s and early 50s, came to the court. I guess that this is their weekly outing. Obviously ex professionals or guys who trained for some time, they suggested a full-court game. Hey, why not?

I admit without hesitation – they were better than my partners. But it was not the skills of my teammates what made me furious, but the behavior of older “Sirs”.

Knowing the rules better, they used them so that the score was always on their side. They were mocking my players, being annoying, “booing” while I was shooting… I do not remember when I met people acting like that on the court! Instead of being true players, they acted like children in kindergarten. One of them, the smallest one (why is it always the smallest one?...) had so many comments, that it was getting boring.

I am emotional, so I exploded. I knew that they understood English, so loud “bullshit!” gave my opinion about their acting pretty precisely. And then it all started.

The little guy took it VERY personally. He stated shouting, jumping at me, others came in to support him, they all started shouting in Chinese… Just imagine a scene from American movie, where black people are about to start a brawl. I had something like that, only Chinese edition.

Shocked and amazed how furious they got, I tried to ease the conflict and started repeating “I’m sorry” to everyone. Somehow, it ended, but I said that I am not going to play with them anymore if they are acting like that. That made them angry once again, but I was not listening any more.

One of the NTU students, who I was playing with, explained me the situation. Apparently, they try not to show their emotions. All of them were pissed off, but I was the only one who exploded. Why? First of all, due to the fact, that one should always control his emotions. That is a little bit hypocritical, because young guys were doing it great, while the oldboys did not follow that rule at all. Secondly – there is always respect for the elder people. Well, this makes sense, but not on a basketball court! On the court everyone is equal, and you should treat each other with respect. And if someone does not treat me how he should – why should I?

When I presented these views to Dennis (NTU student), he admitted, that I was right, but it does not work that way in Asia. Well, I saw that.

I will have to adjust, non them, right?

Anyway, it started raining hard, and everyone had to go off the court. On my way out, I met my ex-opponents, we all shook hands, said sorry, no harm.

Oh yeah – everyone, except the small guy… I wonder, if he is a professor at NTU?...

The First Story

Well, as it occurs, you do not heave to leave your country to have first adventure linked with the trip:)

So... It is 28th August, before midnight. I am all packed and ready to go. Met with all of my friends, said goodbye to pretty much everyone, been on the good-bye-dinner with the family. But something occurs to be wrong.

What? There's the riddle:

I know that I will land in Taiwan on 1st September.
I know that I will spend 1 night in London.
And I know that I will be leaving London on Monday.

So, where is the catch?

Well.... I forgot that it is Friday and that August has 31 days:)

But thanks to that I got one extra night at home, without stress, no hurries, no problems. Cool huh?:)

I dedicate this post and riddle to Jimmy, who newer believed that I will start the blog and that I will write something on it. I will also try to compare Asia to Europe (and Poland in particular) in different ways - cultural, political, academical or even according to sports ( In 2 days deaflympics are going to start in Taipei!). But hopefully it will not be that serious and at least a bit interesting:)

OK, I am good to go. Let me start with the description of the Asian Experience!
